There's a whole world of free, freemium or affordable paid tools out there that can be utilized to a high degree of success. At the end of the day most teams can't afford to spend tens of thousands of dollars annually on Domaintools Iris or Enterprise packages for other expensive tools. Knowing the affordable tool space can empower a team to have most or all of the "expensive" capabilities at a fraction of the price, with some compromises.
Additionally - some capabilities are ONLY offered by free or affordable toolsets, as the paid tools that most people use often only cover a few specific functions. There are plenty of "untraditional" tools that I use.
